The Political Boundaries of Ethnic Divisions
نویسندگان
چکیده
We use a policy experiment in Indonesia to show how local political boundaries affect ethnic tension. Redrawing district borders along group lines reduces conflict. However, the gains stability are undone or even reversed when new increase polarization. Greater polarization leads more violence around majoritarian elections but has little effect lower-stakes, proportional representation elections. These results point distinct incentives for winner-take-all settings with contestable public resources. Overall, our findings illustrate promise and pitfalls of redrawing diverse countries where it is infeasible each have its own administrative unit. (JEL D72, D74, J15, O15, O17, O18)

Ethnic divisions, political institutions and the duration of declines A political economy theory of delayed recovery
This paper analyzes the duration of large economic declines and provides a theory of delayed recovery. First, we develop a formal political economy model that illustrates a simple mechanism of how weak constraints on the political executive can lead to longer declines in ethnically heterogeneous countries. The model shows how uncertain post-recovery incomes and a ‘winner-take-all’ threshold eff...

A body of literature suggests that ethnic heterogeneity limits economic growth. This paper provides microeconometric evidence on the direct effect of ethnic divisions on productivity. In team production at a plant in Kenya, an upstream worker supplies and distributes flowers to two downstream workers who assemble them into bunches. The plant uses an essentially random rotation process to assign...
متن کاملPredicting Ethnic Boundaries
It is increasingly accepted within the social sciences that ethnic boundaries are not fixed, but contingent and socially constructed. As a result, predicting the location of ethnic boundaries across time and space has become a crucial but unresolved issue, with some scholars arguing that the study of ethnic boundaries and predictive social science are fundamentally incompatible. This paper atte...

Explaining cross-country differences in growth rates requires not only an understanding of the link between growth and public policies, but also an understanding of why countries choose different public policies. This paper shows that ethnic diversity helps explain crosscountry differences in public policies, political stability, and other economic indicators. In the case of Sub-Saharan Africa,...
